Computer systems such as clusters, grids and clouds rely heavily on techniques for storing vast amounts of unstructured data. Notions like performance, availability, scalability and security are among the main requirements. In this survey we present such a storage – distributed storage – and describe problems related to the design and implementation. The emphasis is put on distributed file systems, but we also present some other forms, such as key-value stores.
